McCarran Airport Las Vegas halts or deletes $360 million in projects from their five year capital improvement plan. The huge $3.7 billion in improvements to McCarran Airport is shedding some projects due to the current credit market and downturn in the airline industry.
One highly anticipated improvement that will continue, over the 10 delayed, will be a $114 million heliport. Clark County commissioners say residents are ready to move the overhead flying helicopters to Sloan with construction starting second half of 2009. The helicopters take tourists on Grand Canyon tours.
Helicopter tour operators could exercise their rights to move to the Henderson airport. This action would take the financial and political capital McCarran has already spent on the new heliport.
One major improvement halted was the $215 million for reconstruction of runway 25R. Aircraft tires wear grooves in the runway asphalt and need constant monitoring.
Other airport delayed projects include a $9.3 million baggage system and a $6 million curbside signs.
The future expansion will not see a $10 million baggage claim’ escalators expansion.
Close scrutiny of improvements by airliners due to the $145 a barrel oil and decrease in airline travel. Most of the improvements are funded by airlines using the airport.
