Nate Marquardt vs. Anderson Silva
Round one in the Octagon: Nate Marquardt came in for an early takedown and Anderson Silva hit him with a counterpunch. Silva then followed with a kick, but Nate caught it and took him down. Marquardt tried to work past guard while Silva looked for a triangle, but neither was successful. Marquardt stood up and landed some overhand rights while Silva on his back. With 1:30 to go, referee John McCarthy stood them up. With the round almost over, Silva got a takedown and gave several hard shots. Marquardt stopped defending himself and referee McCarthy stopped the bout.

This is the first time in 34 pro mixed martial arts bouts that Marquardt’s been knocked out.
UFC 73 Lightweight Championship Match:
Hermes Franca vs. Sean Sherk
Sherk fought off teeth shattering knee strikes from Hermes Franca and sacrificed his chin to hold onto his lightweight title. The fight was scored 50-45, 50-45, 49-46 unanimous decision win.
Sherk’s strength and frame of 5-foot-6 frame was too much for Franca to handle over a little under 30 minutes. Franca came in on a three-fight win streak and connected many times to Sherk’s chin at the beginning of the rounds, but Sherk wrestled Franca (18-6) to the ground.
Tito Ortiz tried every mixed martial arts move to win the fight, but a point deduction in the second round due to grabbing the fence cost him the needed victory in a Ultimate Fighting Championship fight that was ruled a draw.
Ortiz used his reach advantage and size to keep Evans (10-0-1) at bay and connect with high kicks and straight lefts and rights.
Ortiz powered Evans against the cage and controled the ground game, except at the end of the third round. But that wasn’t enough to hand Evans his first loss.
