“The Women’s Leadership Council was created to promote community involvement and philanthropic giving among local women,” said Lawrel Larsen, Director, United Way of Southern Nevada’s Women’s Leadership Council. “Celebrating our Five-year Anniversary, we are now more than 100 members strong and creating lasting change through the members’ gifts of time, leadership and financial support to United Way of Southern Nevada.”

WLC’s mission is to engage and develop its members to be leaders in creating impactful change in the community through education, health and financial stability. The group is improving children’s lives through its Family Engagement Resource Centers (FERCs), which are located at five local high schools and target teens at risk of not graduating. Over the past three years, WLC has donated over $400,000 to the FERCs, nurturing more than 3,500 high schoolers.

As a result of the 2012 WLC Annual Women’s Suit Drive, more than 6,200 professional items were collected including suits, dresses, shoes, handbags and jewelry. Items collected benefited Safe Nest, S.A.F.E. House, the Shade Tree, Goodwill of Southern Nevada’s Career Connection, HopeLink and HELP of Southern Nevada’s Work Opportunity Readiness Center, and the Women’s Development Center. All of these accredited United Way agencies have back-to-work programs for women.

Three new projects on the horizon for the group include further impacting children’s lives through education initiatives. WLC will partner with Spread the Word Nevada, a United Way of Southern Nevada accredited agency, to sponsor monthly events that provide breakfast with a book to at-risk children.

Another project will provide books and financial planning information in three United Way of Southern Nevada school-based health clinic waiting rooms. The third new project offers 24-hour bus passes at no cost to students and parents that will make it easier to attend after school, evening and weekend events and presentations at the FERCs.

The members of the Women’s Leadership Council impact lives through their investment of $2,500 or more annually to United Way of Southern Nevada. The Annual Luncheon Fashion Show is a culmination of the women’s combined financial support and time.

The Annual Luncheon Fashion Show includes an exclusive DKNY fashion show, featuring WLC members as the models. Attendees can also purchase raffle tickets for a chance to win a Hearts On Fire Fulfillment Diamond Pendant courtesy of MJ Christensen Diamonds, a luxurious DKNY cashmere Cozy sweater and a gift certificate for dinner for two at Verandah at Four Seasons Hotel Las Vegas.

All attendees who complete an interest card will be eligible to win two tickets to the taping of The Ellen Degeneres Show. To purchase charity event tickets, please visit http://uwsn.org/wlcluncheon/
